Singapore: Tougher regime to combat workplace fatalities

The Ministry of Manpower is introducing tougher enforcement penalties to combat the growing number of workplace fatalities. ‘Stop work’ notices have been increased from two to three weeks. The site will the only be allowed to be reopened once certain conditions have been met – such as refresher training and a re-audit of health and safety management. Affected sites will be put on a special watch list and may have their licence to hire foreign workers revoked. The Ministry is also going to communicate more effectively that under the WSH Act, companies that fail to take reasonably practicable measures to ensure the safety and health of their workers can be fined up to $500,000 for even their first offence.
