Turkey: Door closes on free movement

Although the Turkish government has introduced a new-style passport containing a chip holding an individual’s fingerprint and facial image it has not led to visa free travel into the EU’s Schengen area. Earlier this year agreement was reached with the European Commission on visa-free travel, provided that the new passport was introduced. But since then the Commission has had second thoughts about the deal following the harsh post-coup attempt clamp down in recent months. Therefore the October 31st deadline specified in the deal has now come and gone and it will take a whole new set of negotiations to bring a new agreement into prospect.
