Global: KLM under fire over breastfeeding tweet

Although most country laws establish the right of working mothers to breastfeed infants at work, they sometimes qualify this by reference to appropriate facilities being provided to ensure privacy for mother and child. There are, however, cultures where such a practice may be considered offensive to others. For that reason, airlines have found themselves at the forefront of a growing controversy. Recently, KLM issued a statement concerning passengers, which read: “To ensure that all our passengers of all backgrounds feel comfortable on board, we may request a mother to cover herself while breastfeeding.” Other airlines have followed suit, with the Irish airline, for instance, stating: “Breastfeeding mothers are very welcome on board our flights… We’re a family-friendly airline and there have never been any issues on board our flights.” Employers may wish to review their current policies in respect to this issue in light of prevailing legislation.
