By the end of this year the World population will have reached 8BN and by 2050 it will have reached at least 10BN. By then, India will have taken over from China as the World’s most populous country and Nigeria taken over from the USA as the World’s third most populous country. 40% of the globe’s population will therefore be Indian, Chinese or Nigerian. The sustainable population has been estimated to be between 1.5 and 3 BN. Not only will a more heavily populated World be more vulnerable to pandemics, but also to the greatest danger of all – famine. World food stocks will currently not even last for the time between successive harvests. Continued population growth and rising living standards will also tip the World over into an inescapable vortex of global warming.
