There are well over 50 expressions in the English language for dismissal, but they do not all mean the same thing. According to Google trends the most popular currently in use are termination (Singapore), redundancy (UK), the sack (Germany), a firing (USA), retrenchment (South Africa) and excessing (USA). Other interesting expresions are dehire, derecruit, outplace, unassign and career transition. All are designed to make their user more comfortable about a very uncomfortable experience for those laid off.
