How to cross borders

Regular travellers who wish to pass through border controls faster can now do so in several countries.

Australia and New Zealand allow those  holding ePassports from the US, Canada, and the UK, to use the SmartGates without pre-registration.

Canada operates priority access for US Citizens and other approved nationals through the Use of a Nexus card. This card is obtainable by signing up for the US Global Entry program.

Germany operates an “Easypass” service. This service can be used at Frankfurt am Main, Munich, Cologne/Bonn, Dusseldorf, Berlin-Schönefeld, Berlin-Tegel, and Hamburg  Although designed for EU citizens it can also be used by US and Hong Kong citizens by going for a one-time police interview and background check at the airport

The Dutch Privium/FLUX memberships allow faster access for US citizens using the Schipol airport. Privium costs more but also offers faster security clearance.

France: Some airlines issue customers with a “fast lane” voucher for Charles De Gaulle Airport.

Japan has a trusted traveller programme. This requires a rather convoluted online application, but it is relatively inexpensive.

Visitors who have travelled to Taiwan at least three times in a twelve month period may apply for a pass to use the speedy inspection counter to clear immigration. The permit is valid for one year.

The UKs Registered Traveller Programme is available to US citizens aged 18+ who have visited the UK 4 times in the last 24 months. Membership is available online for a modest fee. Once accepted (in about two weeks) a visitor will be able to use the EU citizen lanes at Birmingham, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Glasgow, Heathrow, London City, Luton, Manchester, and Stansted airports

The USA has a ‘Global Entry’ program. Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection permit that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travellers upon arrival in the United States. Members enter the United States through automatic kiosks at certain airports.
